Hi!
My name is Gulcan Demirtas and I am the art teacher here at Dexter Middle School. I am so glad to be a part of the Dexter community, working with staff and students to create an exciting learning experience for everyone here.
I am originally from Turkey. I moved to United Stated in 1996.I am a Memphian since the year 2000. Being in south and living in Memphis with my family is great because I not only get to enjoy southern food and blues music I also benefit from all of the cultural attractions that Memphis has to offer. I knew from a very early age that art would be a big part of my life. I was constantly creating, in fact, I would never let my mom throw away anything because I would inevitably make something out of it. To this day, I can't help looking at a empty Altoids mint tin box and visualizing altered memory box version of it.
I attended Uludag University at Bursa/Turkey, and received my bachelor's degree in Art Education with a concentration in graphic arts. Earned my masters degree in Art Education from Memphis College of Art. I earned my Montessori certification from MMI and I taught in private Montessori schools for 14 years in Memphis before start working for Shelby County Schools. I taught private art lessons for young children and adults and conducted workshops, summer camps around the town . I participated and continue to participate art exhibits.
I strive to align my curriculum with state art standards. I like to expose the students to a variety of different materials and introduce them to the artwork of artists from all around the world and throughout history.
